As a parent, I was thrilled to find this resource - it’s done the work for me that I would’ve never had the time (nor the background knowledge) to do.

Start with a Book: Your must have free reading resource as a parent

  • Start with a Book has ideas on what to do with your kids all year long - and the ideas are educational, interactive, and fun!  Check out how I've used Start with a Book with my kids in my blog series, Read. Talk. Explore!
  • There are 24 themes such as inventors, art, dinosaurs, planes, music, superheroes, the night sky, the ocean and many more.
  • Each theme comes with a list of fiction and nonfiction books related to the theme, along with activities to do with your kids, recommended apps, and for Washington DC residents - a list of related places to visit.
  • WETA, Washington DC's Public Broadcasting Station, partnered with leading researchers and experts in the field of reading to create these resources.
  • The information for each theme is packaged into PDF's that you can download and print.

Start with a Book is a part of WETA's Reading Rockets site, a national literacy project that offers research-based reading strategies, lessons and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better.
